Pea Protein according to Laura Vetter, R.D.N., C.D.C.E.S.

Organic Pea Protein

“On average, two tablespoons of high-quality pea [protein] powder can contain between 15-20 g of protein,” explains Laura Vetter, R.D.N., C.D.C.E.S., an outpatient dietitian at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. “For healthy individuals, the general rule for protein is 0.8 grams per kg or 0.35 g per pound [of body weight].” And, pea protein is full of important amino acids that are easily digestible, Vetter notes.

The experts at WebMD explain, The vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in hemp seeds can provide some significant health benefits. For example, hemp oil is rich in vitamin E, which is useful for helping keep your immune system functioning. It also acts as an antioxidant, helping reduce free radicals that can cause cell damage in your body.

Flax according to Mayo Clinic and Jared Meacham

Organic Flax (Health Bear uses Ground Flax)

Flaxseed’s health benefits come from the fact that it’s high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as phytochemicals called lignans.

Trendy Grocery

Health Bear is finding its way onto grocery store shelves in California. Because we study the grocery industry so closely, here are some cool grocery store trends you should know about.

                            Dining IN?

2023 is predicted to be a year where Americans are spending more money in the grocery stores than at restaurants.  Combatting record increases in food prices with more in-home dining …sounds like a welcomed idea… if you enjoy cooking and find yourself in pleasant company! Grocery store buyers are searching for emerging and exciting brands to stock on their shelves for your at-home enjoyment. Keep a watchful eye at your favorite grocery store for new additions.

Convenience is King

Another expected trend to continue to grow in 2023 is the continued growth of ‘convenience foods’. Health Bear Fits the category to a T. It was not longer than a decade or two ago we equated  ‘convenience food’ with funky frozen TV dinners and questionable canned meats.  Gone are the days people are making sauces from scratch when we have authentic Italian Marinara ready with the twist of a lid. Thank you grocery executives for bringing us awesome, healthy conveniences!

              Modernizing Savings

The third grocery trend to watch for is the return to coupon. If you are interested in cutting grocery costs, don’t forget this time-tested technique. We all remember our Grandmothers cutting coupons out of the newspaper on the kitchen table growing up, right?! Now-A-Days, check out your grocery store’s website to find coupons before you head out.

What is the Reginivore Diet?

The Reginivore Diet

Leveraging Sustainability to Improve Your Health

With the new year just around the corner, it’s a great time to reflect on how to improve our life’s experience here on the planet. Many of us are asking, “How can I live a healthier lifestyle”?  In years past, our response has been to carry on with a new exercise routine or perhaps take up a new healthy hobby. This is good, well done… but there is more.

A trending diet aimed at simultaneously addressing the health of the planet and our bodies has emerged.  The Regenivore Diet  is a way of eating to support the health of the planet and our bodies. Following these tips will have your body feeling amazing and you will rejoice knowing your eating style is making a difference.

Follow these 3 easy tips to give the Regenivore Diet a go.

  1. EAT FOODS THAT REGERATE THE SOIL. Up your consumption of organic fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Reduce your consumption of animal protein including dairy and eggs. Why? First, consider all of the acres being used to farm animals. The waste from those facilities are polluting and  damaging the soil for miles around. Secondly, consider how many more acres of forests are being plowed down to grow crops to feed the animals. These are not organic gardens- they are large scale, biologically engineered grain production sites pumped with synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides that further exploit the soil.  So ditch the meat for plant  and rejoice in the fact you are contributing to the climate change solution. Your figure and your health will also rejoice!
100 grams of beef protein can result in the release of the equivalent of 105 kilograms of CO2. The same amount of protein from a well-managed field of peas, by contrast, typically releases the equivalent of only about 0.2 kg of CO2.

2. BUY FROM LOCAL FARMERS WHO PRACTICE REGENERATIIVE AGRICULTURE . Next time you are visiting with growers at your local farmers market, ask the about their regenerative practices. Organic farms will, by definition, be adding nutrients to the soil by means of their organic farming techniques. Learning about their holistic practices will inspire you to continue subscribing to the concept of The Regenerative Diet. Meanwhile, you will be taking home produce with higher nutritional contents than conventionally grown produce.

3. MIND FOOD WASTE & COMPOST. Buying but not consuming food wastes electricity and water and supports the need for more transportation- all of which contributes to CO2 emissions.  Be mindful to not over-buy at the store. If you do stumble upon a bag of produce past its peak lingering in your frog, there is a solution. Start composting with your kitchen scraps and encourage your friends and local restaurants to do the same. Many people are afraid to start, but give it a try. It is easier and much less stinky than you fear!

Food scraps and tossed veggies create methane gas in a landfill- a potent and toxic gas that adds to greenhouse gas emission.

Transforming eating habits, improving food production and reducing food waste are three ways to begin your Regnerative Diet practice! The outcome will be  a mostly plant based diet and a renewed thoughtfulness surrounding global sustainability.  You will be feeling and looking gorgeous in the new year!

#1 Way to Transform Post-COVID Era for the Better

Support Woman Owned Businesses

#1 Action you can Take to Transform the Post-COVID Era for the Better

The impact of the pandemic, shortages and current economic turmoil has
further widened the disparity between women-owned businesses, particularly
those owned by women of color, and other businesses. Closing the revenue
and employment gap by supporting and revitalizing women-owned businesses
will not only help to fuel economic growth and recovery, but also will empower
women as leaders and bring about a more diverse, balanced and sustainable
economy.

Like a Boss

We also know that families and communities continue to suffer from the
economic and societal effects of the last few years and may not have extra
consumer dollars to spend. That’s why we are calling on consumers to
take everyday essentials they use and consciously choose to instead
source it from a women-owned business – put simply #MakeOneSwitch.
This year, we ask you to take the #MakeOneSwitch movement one step
further.

This holiday season, try to help your friends, family and coworkers
discover a new favorite Women Owned brand by gifting an essential that
will help them make the switch to sourcing more of their everyday needs
from Women Owned businesses. Practical gifting (always a winner in our
book) meets supporting women entrepreneurs – what is not to love?

Protein Oatmeal Cups are a perfect example. Show your family and loved ones you care about their health and nutrition by turning them on to a convenient plant based protein breakfast they can enjoy well into the new year.  Health Bear is owned by a female entrepreneur based in California.

Perfect Bootie with this ONE Exercise

Want a Bootie that says POW?

Are you on the hunt for the latest techniques to enhance your fitness journey?  Welcome, Health Bear’s Fit Squad! Our newest member, Sam Abrams is personal trainer to Silicon Valley’s movers and shakers. He is sharing his knowledge with you to help you elevate your routine to the next level.

Personal Trainer Sam Abrams

Want a bootie that says POW? Sam, what is your top trick to build a gorgeous bootie?

What you need to understand is a fitness fundamental… Adduction Exercises.

“Adduction means bringing a limb toward the midline of the body. This joint action occurs every time we take a step, walk up a flight of stairs, or get up off the floor. Adduction exercises can help us do all of these things. It’s not talked about very much, but adduction is also essential to the use of our glutes.  Everyone wants to do abduction exercises, which draw the leg away from the midline, for their glutes, but if the body can’t adduct, it can’t use it’s abductors. This is because muscles like to lengthen before they contract. When we adduct (draw the leg toward the midline), the abductors (muscles that draw the leg away from the midline) are stretched and then, like a rubber band that has been stretched, the adductors want to contract hard to return to their normal length. If the abductors can’t stretch, they can’t really work well. For example if all we do is abduction exercises like band walks and the abduction machine, we might actually limit our ability to train our glutes”.

What is a good adduction exercise?

Sumo Squat
Sumo deadlift. In a sumo deadlift, the legs are wider than the hands. The knees are so far away from the midline that the body and the adductors fight to try to bring the legs back toward the midline. As an added benefit, this exercise also works the glutes, and whole leg.

What types of muscle do adduction exercises work?
Adduction exercises for the leg would work all of the muscles of the inner thigh. These groin muscles are sometimes referred to collectively as adductors. Adductors are important for stabilizing the knee and hip, protecting the low back, and supporting pelvic floor function, and these functions are essential for walking, getting up and down off the ground, and turning. These muscles also assist in explosive movements like sprinting, jumping, and changing direction so they are essential for athletic performance as well.
What is your #1 favorite exercise to build the bootie?
My favorite abduction exercise is a single leg deadlift with a band around the knees. This exercise is not often seen in commercial gyms but it works wonders for those who have trouble turning on their glutes. The single leg stance forces the abductors to stabilize the pelvis and the band around the knees forces the abductors to pull the leg away from the midline.

Expert Reveals 3 Secrets Goals to Better Your Life by Andrea Needham

Self-Improvement Goals That Focus on Self-Care

By contributing editor, Andrea Needhham

It’s natural to strive continually for self-improvement, but there’s a lot going on around the world today causing stress and complicating life. Maybe right now the best goals should focus on taking care of yourself, including your emotional, physical, and mental health.

Enjoy healthy oatmeal with gluten-free plant protein oatmeal cups from HealthBear!

Tackle Your Physical Response to Stress

Stress puts your body into a physical state with increased blood pressure, elevated heart rate, and tense muscles. Some stress can be positive, but too much stress causes physical and emotional challenges. Maybe it isn’t possible to change the source of some of your anxiety, but there are steps you can take to reduce their impact:

  • Cut out the triggers you can control
  • Practice saying “no” to unnecessary demands
  • Make time to relax every day
  • Work on removing negative energy from your day

You could benefit from lighting white candles and sage smudging or including a peaceful guided meditation each morning as you prepare for the day.

Refresh Your Home Environment

Researchers have found that a cluttered home makes it difficult to focus, leads to frustration, and wears you down. Conversely, they’ve also found a correlation between tidy living spaces and increased levels of happiness. Focus on developing simple, daily habits of decreasing clutter, creating an organization that suits your routine, and cleaning a little deeper each day.

Create a Fitness Routine You Look Forward To

You’ll probably never find a self-improvement list that doesn’t include fitness goals. If the word “exercise” causes your heart rate to start racing, take a step back and think about achievable movement activities that you can enjoy. Something as simple as walking your dog or playing a neighborhood game of basketball provides valuable benefits.

Eat and Sleep To Reduce Stress

According to experts, certain foods affect your cortisol levels; among other things, cortisol affects the physical results of stress. Foods that provide relief from stress include poultry, fish, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. The Mediterranean diet is often recommended to people who feel anxious and overwhelmed to the point that their health is suffering.

Your quality of sleep and your ability to handle stress create a cycle that either improves or gets worse, each factor impacting the other. When you start to cram too much into your day and sacrifice quality sleep, your ability to respond to daily stressors decreases. This, unfortunately, also means that the quality of sleep you do get decreases.

Shake Up Your Workday and Start a Business

It’s a fact that if you are spending 8 to 10 hours a day in a stressful job, you will struggle to decrease the emotional and physical impact. You may also find that even if you loved your job a year ago, you now find yourself feeling stagnant. Now may be a great time for a career change.

Maybe you’ll find that the best move for you is starting your own business. Controlling your own business day can be a huge boost to your self-improvement success. There are many online resources available that can help you out; you’ll need to learn about choosing a business idea, finding funding, marketing, and how to structure your business. Instead of hiring an attorney, you can use a formation service to register your business. Read reviews and customer testimonials to find the best LLC formation service for you.

Remember that caring for yourself shouldn’t cause more stress. Choose one or two of these suggestions that resonate with your current situation. Whether you’re starting a new fitness routine or opening a business, pick up new habits that help you feel better each day. With changes that you can easily maintain every day, you may find that you feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally. With your new improvements, you should find that it is easier to handle those stressors that you can’t control.

Surprising Benefits of CERTIFIED Gluten Free

Surprising Benefits of CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE

QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY INDUSTRY EXPERT

  • Why is CERTIFIED gluten free so important?
  • Gluten found in the most unexpected places
  • Which certifier is the most trusted?

Undoubtedly, you or someone you know is following a Gluten Free lifestyle. That being said, there are an estimated 2 million people in the United States suffer from Celiac Disease* and for those folks, it is imperative they can consume GF foods with confidence. For this reason, we at Health Bear are taking the precautionary steps to certify our product Gluten Free. With this massive need comes a massive effort. We hired a consultant to help us through the process and learned a lot along the way.

Highland Naturals Consulting, a firm dedicated to guiding companies like Health Bear, has taken on the role of navigating through the painstaking process of certifying Health Bear as Gluten Free. They have uncovered some little-known facts of the GF world you will find interesting:

Q: Why should companies certify GF?

  • A: Companies get a product certified GF because it creates a trust level with the customer. It is easy to claim gluten free even if you have done testing and it’s under 20ppm. It is much harder to go through the certification process, have the procedures, testing in place to prevent gluten cross – contamination concerns. It also takes the guesswork out of the product for people that are shopping for GF products. They know when its certified, the product has been tested and made in a way to avoid gluten.

Q: Are you seeing any trends in the GF space you find interesting?

  • The gluten free market is growing. It is not just people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance looking for gluten free products. I have seen articles that say as much as 30% of Americans are looking for gluten free options because they consider it a healthier way to live.

Q: Oats are gluten free, so why go through the trouble?

  • Oats themselves are not a gluten concern, however because oats are stored in some of the same grain bins as wheat, rye, barley, the oats can become tainted with gluten from cross – contamination.

Q: What are some unexpected ingredients out there that can be surprisingly tainted with gluten?

  • A: There are definitely some products that you may not think of as having a gluten concern: Play dough can be made with wheat flour and pose a serious gluten concern.

Q: When a company goes through the certification process- what are the maximum parts per million of the gluten that is acceptable?

  • A: The FDA says that you can claim your product is gluten free if you test and the finished product tests under 20 ppm. If you get it certified with GFCO for example the threshold is under 10ppm.

How many companies are out there that certify GF and are some of the logos better than others?

  • There are a handful, like NSF offers it along with other certifications. However, their requirement is only 20ppm. There are other companies that offer gluten free certification as well as other programs. I only know of 2 GF agencies that require under the 20 ppm. GFCO, and Gluten Free Food Program. GFCO requires less than 10 ppm, GFFP is 5 ppm.  One of the most recognized logos in the GF space is GFCO’s logo. They have been a certifying body since 2005 and that is the only certification that they offer.

With so many people living with Celiac Disease, it is so important for companies like Health Bear and others to go through the added effort and expense of being certified to ensure all of our friends can enjoy food without fear.

This fall, Health Bear’s grocery collection will be CERTIFIED gluten free
